Truro on a sunny day sells itself: cobbles, café tables on the street, the cathedral spires against blue sky. Truro in the rain is a city of people speed-walking between shop awnings wondering what the plan is.
Here’s the plan. Eight indoor options, honestly rated, from someone who’s spent plenty of wet Tuesdays in this city.
1. Truro Cathedral
Start with the obvious one, because it’s obvious for a reason. It’s enormous, it’s free to wander (they’ll appreciate a donation), and it has that rare quality of making a grim day outside feel dramatic rather than depressing — rain sounds good against Gothic Revival windows. There’s a café inside when you’re done craning your neck.
2. Hall for Cornwall
Check what’s on before you write the day off. Cornwall’s biggest theatre pulls proper touring shows, comedy and music, and a matinee is one of the great rainy-day moves. Even if today’s programme doesn’t fit, book something for later in the week — it gives the holiday a fixed point the weather can’t touch.
3. The Plaza
Truro’s cinema on Lemon Street. Multiplex films without the multiplex experience, short walk from everything, and exactly as good as cinema on a rainy day has always been.
4. Lemon Street Market
Indoor market with galleries, food and independent stalls. It won’t swallow a whole day, but it’s a solid hour of browsing, and it’s the answer to “can we get presents that aren’t from a chain”.
5. An escape room (20 minutes away, worth the drive)
Full disclosure: this one’s ours. Locked In Cornwall is in Camborne, a straight 20-minute run down the A390 and A30 from Truro, with free parking when you land. Three rooms, 60 minutes each, from £20 a head — and unlike most of this list, it’s something the whole group does rather than looks at. Teenagers who’ve been performatively bored all week suddenly become detectives. Book a slot online, build lunch around it, day rescued.
6. Truro Bowl
Bowling remains bowling: reliable, warm, mildly competitive, and better than another lap of the shops. Good for mixed ages, especially with the bumpers up. (Whoever suggests the bumpers “for the kids” wants them for themselves. Watch.)
7. A swim at the leisure centre
Truro Leisure Centre runs public swim sessions, and there’s something satisfyingly contrary about swimming on a rainy day — you were getting wet regardless, and now it’s on your terms. Check session times online first.
8. The great Truro coffee crawl
On a properly filthy afternoon, lower the ambitions and raise the quality: pick two or three of Truro’s independent coffee shops and bookshops and drift between them. The city centre is compact enough that no dash between awnings lasts more than a minute, and a slow afternoon with a flat white and a paperback is a perfectly legitimate holiday outcome.
The honest verdict
If you’ve got kids climbing the walls: escape room or bowling. If it’s a grown-up day: cathedral, market, coffee crawl, and a show at Hall for Cornwall. If everyone’s tired and damp and negotiations have broken down: cinema. There is no rainy day in Truro that one of those doesn’t fix.
